Copenhagen: City Introduction
by
Copenhagen
My 4th Destination: Land of Dan’s- Danmark/Denmark
Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark. The official language is Danish, but everywhere people speak English. I got a flight from Amsterdam because the road through the demesne is a bit difficult and time consuming. It was only 1hr 15 minutes flight from Amsterdam. The urban centre is easily accessible from the Airport through trains. Just 20 minutes to Copenhagen Central. I was very concerned as I was approaching towards central because everybody has told me that Copenhagen is one of the priciest city in Europe.
At night I moved to one department store to buy something and got to know that Yes, it is nearly 20% more costly than other cities of Europe. And the cause is – TAX.
Here people pay about 40-66% of their earnings as Tax. Of course earnings are higher than any other city, yet Danish people are the happiest people on earth. The reason is whatever they paid as tax it’s all get paid off in the form of amenities from government. Another cause for happiness is Beer. Danish people love to drink Beer because it avails them to become socialized.
Amenities from government
· All medical expenses are waived off.
· No fees for school and colleges of children’s born in Danmark.
· If you wish to have a child both parents will get leave for 12 months with 8% of his/her salary and much more.
People who earn more pay, more tax and those who earn less pay less.
Copenhagen is also called the Cycling capital of the world. Nobody knows how the bicycle has evolved so much in here. People enjoy to do cycling. Separate lanes for cycling. Rentals per day, ranging from 80 to 120 Danish Krone. Local people are very kind, but if you come on their way when they are doing cycling they will become the rowdiest people on earth.
Their mode of pronouncing a word is real unmanageable. Examples: Hygga- Danish people will pronounce it as Huga and Magstraede as MaStra.
The following things I came across while living in Copenhagen:
1) The name is derived from two words: “Copen” means to buy and “Hagen” means Harbour.
2) The City loves fire. It has burnt down completely two times.
3) One of the most expensive city of the world.
4) People love their flag very much. You will see flag almost everywhere around the metropolis.
5) Here apart from normal schooling, in the evening a compulsory school for teenagers called Youth School. Where students can study any subjects of their own selection.
6) Carlsberg – The most famous beer is founded by Danish- Jacob Jackson. The name derived from two words: “Carls” was his son’s name and “Berg” means Hill. At first he started producing beer at home, but due to water problem, he moves to some nearby hill.
7) All electronics items are taxed at a flat rate of 25%. Hence that is why it’s really pricey.
8) Here you will find the world’s best Hot Dogs. It’s actually famous in here and everywhere you will get it at 28 to 30 Danish Krone.
9) Here also people run a lot like any other city. Whether it’s hot or cold or rain people still run.
10) All credits from the city goes to the king of the city “Christian”. He was a very powerful man in those days and that is why after him, whoever has become king their name was Christian 1, 2, 3 and so on.
All the information above, obtained from our walking tour guide Simon. He was from London and living in Copenhagen from last 1 yr.
It was a lengthy stay in Copenhagen, almost for a week. It’s going to end tomorrow. I performed many amazing things here- Beaches, castles, University, Round Tower, Beautiful cafes, Japanese festival, Rains, Walking etc. It was the best 7 days I spent in Europe, also the costliest one. Heading to Istanbul, Turkey tomorrow.
